There have been a couple lunch hanchan (or "lunchan" as we're now calling them) since I last posted, but getting all the pictures takes time I haven't had to properly share the games. A variety of placements.
The current state of Tenhou has me right about where I started when I first ranked up to 5-dan, although with R much higher than when I first ranked up. There have been ups and downs where I was as low as 500/2000 and higher than 1500/2000 but thankfully as I learn more and more of the tokujou landscape I haven't lost this ranking. I think 6-dan is completely doable and my volume of ranked games is trending to double this month.
This motivation to play more was catalyzed by some big news: in the last couple weeks I received notice that I was nominated for one of the seats to the World Riichi Championship in Vienna! I accepted the nomination and I'm looking forward to the tournament and hope I do well. The prospect of playing against the pros that I watch via MLeague and other televised games leaves me thrilled and excited, and hoping to compete well against these amazing players.
If all my games were dedicated to tenhou ranking, I'd probably have quadrupled last month's count in the first two weeks of March. However, Brian and Aaron's attendance at Rochester Riichi Open (side note - the attendance was amazing and I sadly had a conflict so missed out!) last weekend got Southeast Michigan Riichi connected with several other clubs, mainly in NY, PA and Canada, that play in an interclub mahjong league using riichiout.com and an associated discord. As I get involved with this community, playing against other tournament and competitive minded folks using the (mostly) WRC rules with the majsoul platform has been super fun and also helpful to not get entrenched in tenhou's aka ari mindset. This league also allows me to play with four other WRC seatholders and establish some connections that will doubtless make travels to Vienna more fun. As far as I know, this league is pretty open to new players and clubs to join. Contact me on discord and I can get you hooked up with the appropriate channels to play.

In terms of later events, I am waiting to see what the current public health situation does. I hope that ACEN is far enough out that it is not impacted and look forward to mahjong there. The current calendar if nothing is canceled has events in April, May and June that are all driving distance so I will be going to all of them situations permitting. For now, we'll just have to deal with uncertainty.
Thanks for reading and see you at the tables!
