Greetings and welcome to Iishanten Hell! Here we wait for tenpai, and it never comes. I'm Zel, a riichi mahjong player from Michigan. I've been playing riichi since 2005, when I learned at Waseda University during my studies in Japan. From 2005 to 2011 my play was very on and off, and only by chance did I end up moving for work in 2011 to a location where a sizable riichi club plays a few times a month. I am now one of the organizers for Southeast Michigan Riichi and I started taking the game more seriously in 2018 after being introduced to the tournament scene.
I've since climbed to 5 dan on tenhou, where you'll find me at the tokujou tables under the handle 'zelkin'. This was originally the handle for an MMO character and I shortened it to be my online handle for almost everything in the mid 2010s. On Mahjong Soul, you can find me as Zel, of course! And if you are a bit of a gamer and play riichi and FFXIV, you can find me on the Aether Data Center, Siren server as Cian Morrigan (bit of an Irish mythology lover). I still don't have the coveted 'Mahjong Master' title due to queue times for games being so long, but I've been making consistent progress.
To start, I have tried to develop a habit of playing a hanchan during my lunch break at work. I was told on Discord that I should blog about this, and here we are! I thank Botan, Twi and others for this suggestion as it should be a fun project. Zel's Lunch Hanchan series entries will cover one game each, including my thoughts and analysis and any retrospective ideas. Suggestions and comments from readers are encouraged!
Wherever our paths may cross, I look forward to sharing games and stories of mahjong with you all.
